What exactly is Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX ) up to? Is it still a drink experience destination or is it pursuing recognition as a broader food and beverage brand? Analysts may view its deal with yogurt maker Danone (NASDAQOTH: DANOY ) as nothing but creamy goodness, but I think it risks mixing its message too much and will end up confusing the consumer.
Blending coffee, tea, and foods is nothing really new for the java maker, and food has represented almost 20% of revenues for years. It generated almost $1.3 billion by selling its products into supermarkets and grocery stores last year, revenues that surged 50% year over yearand the Greek yogurt it will be branding in conjunction with Danone will be hitting grocery store shelves in 2015 under Starbucks' Evolution Fresh brand, which it acquired in 2011.
Greek yogurt is certainly a growth market, one that accounted for just 1% of the refrigerated yogurt sales in 2007 but that has surged to more than 35% today, even as regular yogurt sales have fallen 8%. According to the folks at Nielsen, U.S. sales ofGreek yogurt jumped 48% in the last 12 months, to $2.65 billion.

When Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX ) spun off its midstream assets into a master limited partnership, the market was thrilled. The spin-off, Phillips 66 Partners, or PSXP, had the third-biggest MLP IPO pop in history as investors flocked to the idea of a mature business generating stable revenue. Based on previous announcements, there is potential that at least three more refiners will attempt a similar move between now and the end of next year.

Before you conclude that a stock is fundamentally cheap based on its P/E ratio, though, you need to look not just at its current earnings but also at its future prospects. Often, especially with cyclical stocks, you'll find that P/E gives you the exact opposite message that you'd expect. Consider these examples:
In the energy sector, oil giants ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM ) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) both have attractive P/E ratios of around 10. Yet looking forward, analysts don't expect either company to produce a lot of profit growth, as both companies have had to work extremely hard to avoid massive output declines stemming from falling production levels from their respective oil-field assets. As long as Exxon and Chevron can acquire new properties with lucrative prospects, they'll be able to keep revenue up, but it's far from certain whether they'll succeed in finding new discoveries. The cyclical trend is even more apparent in the refining industry. Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC ) and Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX ) have made huge share-price advances over the past year, as extremely wide spreads between crude oil prices in the U.S. and abroad have led to unusually high profits for refined-product sales. Now, though, analysts have increasingly concluded that a combination of rising costs, greater regulation, and narrowing spreads will lead to falling profits, making current P/Es based on trailing earnings artificially low if they turn out to be right. You can find similar trends in other industries as well. Even in the traditionally high-growth tech industry, many sector giants have seen their P/E ratios plunge as earnings growth has slowed to a standstill. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL ) is one of the most notable of these companies, with explosive growth during the 1990s having given way more recently to the PC bust and concerns about the viability of its business model going forward. Its share price has fall

Finally, regional bank First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN ) , which has banking branches throughout Tennessee, added 4.2% just a day after paying shareholders a $0.05 quarterly dividend. Like Genuine Parts, there is no company specific news driving First Horizon higher, but the prospect for a higher net interest margin because of higher interest rates is certainly adding a boost to banks like First Horizon that rely on traditional loan and deposit growth. But as my Foolish colleague John Maxfield recently pointed out, you may want to keep your expectations for First Horizon tempered in the interim.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Roberto Pedone]
Another under-$10 name pharmaceutical player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Siga Technologies (SIGA), which discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes drugs to prevent and treat diseases including smallpox, Ebola, dengue, Lassa fever and other dangerous viruses. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up by 35%.
If you take a look at the chart for SIGA Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been trending inside of a consolidation pattern for the last two months, with shares moving between $3.16 on the downside and $3.74 on the upside. Shares of SIGA have just started to spike higher above its 50-day moving average at $3.27 a share and it's now moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent range.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in SIGA if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.70 to $3.74 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $4 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 263,209 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SIGA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.60 a share. If that level gets taken out with volume, then SIGA could easily tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $5 to $5.90 a share.
Traders can look to buy SIGA off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day moving average of $3.26 a share, or below more key support at $3.16 a share. One can also buy SIGA off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
