Getty Images Americans have super-sized food portions to the point of expanding waists and increasing waste. While producing food from farm to fork uses half of our land and 80 percent of our freshwater, 40 percent of that nourishment is wasted. The Natural Resources Defense Council in 2012 concluded we throw out more than 20 pounds of food per person per month, with a value of $165 billion each year. Meanwhile, 21 percent of Americans know someone who doesn't have enough to eat, according to a Harris Poll released this month. The council says that by reducing food waste by just 15 percent, we could feed more than 25 million Americans every year. "With so many people wanting for food in the U.S., it would be easy to think that there simply isn't enough to go around," says Mike de Vere, president of the Harris Poll, "but the sad fact is that if we could cut down on waste and get our surplus food to the right tables, we could feed as many as 25 million Americans. With more than one in five children at risk of hunger in our country, these are challenges we need to take seriously." Of the 2,300 American adults polled, most see the problem of hunger in the United States as either serious (53 percent) or very serious (22 percent). In the survey, 86 percent feel that feeding hungry families in the United States should be solved before America tackles the problem on a global level (although 85 percent want that addressed, too. And 78 percent say that wasting food is immoral. The council says the average American consumer wastes 50 percent more food than in the 1970s –- and ten times as much food as someone in Southeast Asia. Reducing waste to combat hunger is an issue that will be of growing concern in the years to come. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says that food production must increase by 70 percent by 2050 to feed an expected global population of some 9.1 billion.

    Yet there is a fourth major competitor in the commercial aircraft market -- Bombardier (NASDAQOTH: BDRAF  ) -- and it has its own advanced-technology airplane. The company's CSeries plane is expected to make its first flight as early as this week. Yet the CSeries put up a goose egg at the Paris Air Show, failing to notch a single order. While Bombardier has nearly 200 firm orders for the CSeries, the company will rapidly burn through that backlog once it starts CSeries mass production.

    Since the initial drop, shares of United Tech have bounced back a bit. They’re down 0.8% at $106.93 at 12:03 p.m. That drop puts it out of step with other industrial stocks, which have been stronger today. Electronic Components

The Company offers interconnect and electro-mechanical products, including connectors, relays, switches, circuit breakers and lighted products. The Company maintains connector components in inventory, which allows the Company to respond to customer orders. In addition, its lighted switch assembly operation affords customers same day service, including engraving capabilities in multiple languages.

Machined Parts and Other

Machined par! ts are de! signed for a specific customer and are assigned original product manufacturers (OEM)-specific SKUs. The machined parts, the Company distributes include laser cut or stamped brackets, milled parts, shims, stampings, turned parts and welded assemblies made of materials ranging from high-grade steel or titanium to nickel based alloys.     Sterne Agee & Leach analysts Peter S. Arment and Josh Sullivan believe so, even if the stock�� recent performance suggests Wall Street isn�� all that sure.

    In a research note published today after the maker of Otis elevators, Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines and Carrier air-conditioning systems offered investors muted financial targets 2014, the Sterne duo�predicted�respectable top-line growth and impressive cash generation that will ��ffectively put a valuation floor in despite all the moving parts.��/p>

    The Wall Street Journal reports:

    [United Technologies] sees full-year sales for the new year just above the expected level for 2013, as organic sales growth is expected to be slightly offset by net divestitures. The company has recently renewed its focus on aerospace and commercial businesses, in the process shedding units that don’t fall into those segments, such as a wind-turbine operation and a rocket-engine business. Recent results have also been bolstered by the acquisition of aircraft-component maker Goodrich Corp.� For the new year, United Technologies forecast profit between $6.55 to $6.85 a share on about $64 billion in sales. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a per-share profit of $6.84 on $66.3 billion in sales.

    Analysts at William Blair downgraded United Technologies to from Outperform to Market Perform.

    But�Sterne�� Arment and Sullivan wrote that the company has a track record of under promising and over delivering. The analysts see United Technologies earning $6.80 a share in 2014 on revenue of $65.8 billion.

    The duo expect free cash flow of almost $6 billion. They�write:

The Propulsion Systems segment engages in the development, production, and marketing of struts/pylons; nacelles, including thrust reversers; and related engine structural components primarily to aircraft or engine OEMs, as well as provides related spares and MRO services. The Wing Systems segment develops, produces, and markets wings and wing components comprising flight control surfaces and other miscellaneous structural parts primarily to aircraft OEMs, as well as offers related spares and MRO services. This segment is also involved in designing, engineering, and manufacturing structural components for military aircrafts, including low observables that are radar absorbent and translucent materials; and radome new builds and refurbishment. It also provides other military services, such as fabrication, bonding, assembly, testing, tooling, processing, engineering analysis, and training. Spirit AeroSystems Holdings, Inc. serves large commercial airplanes, business and regional jets, and military/helicopter sectors of the aerostructures industry.
