McDonald's (MCD) earnings were better than expected, but the results re-exposed the lingering weaknesses in the firm's fundamental business. The company reported year-over-year revenue growth of only 2% to $7.2 billion, slightly better than analysts' average expectation of $7.15 billion. EPS of $1.38 beat expectations of $1.33 -- estimates were lowered several times by analysts before the earnings. The firm reported $5.36 EPS for the full year.
Higher commodities and labor costs reduced McDonald's margin to 19.5% in the US. Margins continue to remain in a downward trend -- McDonald's reported U.S. margins of 21.3% in 2010 and 20.6% in 2011. Similarly, in Europe, margins have fallen from 19.8% in 2010 to 19.1% in 2012, and APMEA margins fell to 15.9% in 2012 from 17.8% in 2010.
McDonald's introduced several new value offerings and expanded its Dollar Menu in 2012. This has translated into higher sales volume globally, but is eroding margins as consumers are now purchasing less expensive items from the menu. Offering cheaper items in the menu is squeezing margins that could have a serious negative effect on McDoanld's bottom-line going forward. Moreover, McDonald's increased prices by only 2% during the entire year, when the inflation for the entire sector stood at around 3%, exacerbating margins that were already under pressure from the rising costs of commodities.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:ORLY), AutoZone, Inc. (NYSE:AZO), The Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE:PBY), and Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP) may all technically be in the same business, but they're hardly in the same proverbial boat. In fact, their performances - sales and earnings - are oddly disparate. Which among PBY, AZO, ORLY, and AAP are the winners and the losers, and perhaps more important, why? The question can at least partially be answered by a chart, and what the chart can't tell us about each, the narrative can.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Newman]
In addition to General Mills,Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) represents a stable choice for less stable markets. Last May the company shed less than 3% of its share price, and it outperformed the market by more than 20% between 2007 and 2009. The recent rough weather patterns put a dent in Travelers' earnings, but the company constantly returns value to shareholders through extensive share buybacks, lowering share count an astounding 45% since 2006. Its dividend yield is north of 2%. While multibagger gains aren't likely to be had from this insurance giant, its earnings power and shareholder returns should remain stable.

The first thing you'll notice here is that the widest cash margins don't always go hand in hand with strong earnings performances. Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) and GE (NYSE: GE ) both rank in the bottom half if you rank the Dow by net income margins, and the situation isn't much improved by switching to operating profits or EBIT income margins. Both companies operate much like big banks, which goes a long way toward explaining the spread between their cash flows and net margins.
