Last night news broke that General Electric (GE) had made a formal bid for Alstom’s (ALSMY) thermal, renewable, and grid businesses. Of course, Siemens (SI) has a month to make a bid of its own, but General Electric is currently sitting right where it wants to be.

  • [By MONEY.CNN.COM]

In January 2001, I bought the Siemens (SI) transmission product line and started doing manufacturing work. But then we had the dotcom bust and 9/11. A lot of my customers who sold long-distance merged, went bankrupt, or disappeared. I changed my business model several times, trying to diversify the business and customer base.

  • [By Dan Burrows]

As for strategic positioning, STM is an enviable place. Major customers include Apple, General Electric (GE) and and Siemens (SI). It’s also moving into or already a leader in some hot new markets.

Top 5 Industrial Conglomerate Companies To Watch For 2015

It was a disingenuous promise that has come back to haunt the Obama administration.

Time after time, before and after the law went into effect, President Obama and his aides have promised that people who liked their current health insurance would be able to keep it under the Affordable Care Act.

"If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period," Obama said in a speech to the American Medical Association on June 15, 2009. "If you like your health care plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what."

The president and his people have repeated variations on this pledge countless times. So imagine the surprise of many Americans last week when they received notices that their health insurance policies were being canceled.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks rose as trading began Wednesday, with the Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) climbing 1.7% to 15,234.83, a strong advance after four days of declines. Aiding the export-heavy market was a rise in the U.S. dollar against the yen above the 楼103 level as the yen's safe-haven appeal waned alongside worries about emerging markets. Among exporters, Honda Motor Co. (JP:7267) (HMC) and Toyota Motor Corp. (JP:7203) (TM) shares tacked on 2.4% and 1.5%, respectively, and Hitachi Ltd. (JP:6501) (HTHIF) shot higher by 4.8%. But shares of Advantest Corp. (JP:6857) (ADTTF) dropped 9.3% after the electronics maker widened its full-year forecast. It now expects a net loss of 35.9 billion yen ($347.19 million), compared with a previous forecast for a loss of 2.5 billion yen.

It may seem trite (and a little dated) on the surface, but Warren Buffett's sage advice stands as tall today as it did the first time her ever said it.... "Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful." And, to say investors have been fearful of oil names like Kosmos Energy Ltd (NYSE:KOS), Africa Oil Corp. (CVE:AOI), and Hydrocarb Energy Corp. (OTCBB:HECC) of late would be an understatement. Not only have all three been pressured against a backdrop of plunging oil prices, HECC, KOS, and AOI have been doubly pressured because a big piece of what they do within their oil exploration exploits is done in Africa, where oil's recent volatility has been particularly disruptive. As Buffett  has accurately explained so many times in the past though, trends have a funny way of ending right around the time most investors are certa! in they'l! l never end.

For example, Windows tablets have yet to put the sales of iPads to shame. Past announcements of smartwatches never saw them become a must for the fashion conscious. This year, perhaps one of the most eyebrow-raising claims belonged to Comcast (CMCSA) (CMCSK). "We expect that customer service will soon be one of our best products," said CEO Neil Smit, according to tech blog BGR. That would be one astonishing turnaround. Although, as BGR put it, "Considering the quality of most of Comcast's products, this wouldn't be very difficult to achieve." In "The Prince," Machiavelli once debated whether it was better for a leader to be feared or loved. (He said both if possible, but if not, then feared.) What he didn't address so clearly was the utility of being hated. That's been Comcast's quandary, as the company has exceeded at being hated. It won -- if that's the right word -- Consumerist's audience poll of the most hated company in the country last year. That was the second time the largest cable television provider in the U.S. grabbed the crown, with 2010 being the first. Comcast beat out the likes of Monsanto (MON), Walmart (WMT) and Bank of America (BAC). It even bested SeaWorld (SEAS) after the scandalous Blackfish documentary. The reason? Bad customer service. No, make that service so terrible that it has gained national attention on more than one occasion in just the last year: A tech journalist recorded his attempt to cancel his Comcast service, as Time reported, while a "customer retention" specialist desperately tried to keep him from doing so. Mike Aguilera/SeaWorld San Diego/AP In a move that was probably long overdue, SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) is making a change at the top. CEO Jim Atchison will step down next month. The board's chairman will be taking the helm, but only until the marine-life theme park operator finds a new leader. He's not the only one moving on. Reports indicate that roughly 300 of its employees were given pink slips on Friday. If SeaWorld's battling the negative publicity stemming from the company's portrayal in the "Blackfish" documentary, it's not going to fare any better after letting hundreds of its workers go just days ahead of the holidays. The layoffs also contrast Atchison's treatment: He will be getting a severance package worth millions. The change at the top isn't a surprise. SeaWorld has been a disaster since going public at $27 last year, and the stock has fallen all the way down to the mid-teens. Something's not right at SeaWorld, but it's something that may require more than simply a new chieftain. Black and Blue Fish Folks just aren't trekking out to SeaWorld these days. The parent company of SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Aquatica experienced a 4.1 percent decline in attendance last year, and turnstile clicks are off by another 4.7 percent through the first three quarters of 2014. It's not just an attendance problem. SeaWorld posted an 8 percent year-over-year decline in revenue for its latest quarter as a 5 percent slide in attendance was exacerbated by a 3 percent dip in revenue per guest. In other words, it's not just a matter of customers not showing up: When they do come, they'! re not sp! ending as much as they used to for a day at the park. SeaWorld doesn't like to talk about "Blackfish," but it's clearly playing a role in keeping potential patrons away. The documentary takes jabs at SeaWorld for keeping killer whales in captivity and performing for guests, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the slip in revenue per guest has something to do with visitors
