Gilead reported a profit of $2.70 a share, topping forecasts of $2.61 a share, on sales of $7.32 billion, beating estimates for $7.14 billion. That’s where the good news stopped, however. Gilead predicted 2017 product sales in a range of $22.5 billion to $24.5 billion, while analyst forecast revenue of $27.9 billion, and product sales in the $26 billion to $27 billion range. Shares of Gilead Sciences have dropped 3.6% to $70.47 at 4:10 p.m. today.

You would think that when a drug company that's been working for 16 years to develop drugs using a novel therapeutic approach wins its first-ever approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), confetti would fall from the ceiling and its investors would be celebrating a huge stock gain the next day. That didn't happen this week for shareholders of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY), with shares dropping 6.6% the day after the announcement, and there were two main reasons for that.

Spark Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ONCE) reported its hemophilia A drug significantly reduced bleeding events and the need for prophylactic factor VIII infusions, but investors sold shares on worry that the gene therapy's safety could be a problem. Investors similarly headed for the exits with Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD) and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) after the former scuttled an attempt to sell itself and the latter secured a first-in-class FDA approval. Are these falling stocks worth buying?

Wall Street continued its downward streak on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling more than 100 points. Most major benchmarks fell more modestly, with a few actually poking into positive territory on the day. Trade-sensitive stocks were among the weakest as investors focused on uncertainty related to tariff disputes between the U.S. and China. But for some other companies, bad news of a different sort was responsible for the drops in their shares. Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB), Baytex Energy (NYSE:BTE), and Catalyst Biosciences (NASDAQ:CBIO) were among the worst performers on the day. Here's why they did so poorly.

When a brand new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors won Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2015, it was heralded as the biggest advance in battling heart disease since the invention of statins. The launch of PCSK9 inhibitors was accompanied by billion-dollar-plus predictions for sales. However, revenue has fallen far shy of blockbuster status, leaving drugmakers Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:REGN), and Sanofi SA (NYSE:SNY) in the lurch.
